Engineering Phnom Penh’s Next Landmark: Highlights from G.A.T.O. TOWER’s “Design Against Wind” Workshop

PHNOM PENH, 6TH OCTOBER 2026

Building an architectural icon in the heart of Phnom Penh requires far more than visionary design—it demands uncompromising engineering precision and world-class structural standards.

Miraku Capital & Development recently hosted an exclusive technical session, “Workshop – G.A.T.O. TOWER’s Design Against Wind,” bringing together key stakeholders, engineers, and real estate leaders to explore the advanced aerodynamics and safety standards shaping our landmark development.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our esteemed guest speakers for sharing their expert insights:

  • Mr. Inomata, Project Director of Mirakucapital and Development, with 37 years of experience with the highest building in Asia.
  • Dr. Angkeara,  Chief Technology Officer of LBL International & Wise by LBL
  • Mr. Socheat IV ,Technical Director (C&S) of Meinhardt Cambodia

Here are the primary takeaways from this technical masterclass on how G.A.T.O. TOWER is engineered to master the elements.

01 — WHY WIND MATTERS

Understanding Wind Load in High-Rise Structural Design

As skyscrapers rise higher into the skyline, wind becomes the single most critical environmental force acting upon the structure. Unlike static loads like gravity, wind is dynamic, exerting lateral pressure that increases exponentially with height.

During the workshop, our experts explained how unmitigated wind forces can create localized surface pressure, stress on facade materials, and subtle micro-movements. Addressing wind behavior from the earliest design stages ensures:

  • Decades of Structural Resilience: Protecting the main core and foundation systems against atmospheric wear.
  • Facade Integrity: Ensuring high-performance curtain walls withstand localized suction and extreme weather pressure.
  • Ground-Level Harmony: Managing wind currents at pedestrian levels so outdoor plazas and drop-off zones remain pleasant and safe.

02 — HOW WIND IS TESTED

Precision Engineering via Wind Tunnel Simulations

Rather than relying solely on computer estimations, G.A.T.O. TOWER underwent rigorous, empirical wind tunnel testing guided by leading international standards.

Using high-precision physical scale models placed inside specialized aerodynamic laboratories, wind engineering specialists simulated decades of Phnom Penh meteorological data. The tests evaluated:

  1. Overall Structural Forces: Measuring how the building’s core responds under extreme storm and typhoon scenarios.
  2. Cladding & Glass Pressures: Determining exact pressure variations across glass surfaces to specify custom engineering standards for window panels.
  3. Pedestrian Comfort: Mapping micro-wind patterns around the tower base to optimize comfort for residents and visitors at ground level.

These data-driven simulations allowed our engineering teams to refine G.A.T.O. TOWER’s geometry, optimizing its aerodynamic performance long before construction began.

03 — SAFETY & COMFORT

Balancing Structural Resilience with Occupant Serenity

A world-class skyscraper must achieve two distinct goals: total structural safety and complete residential peace of mind.

By incorporating the wind tunnel data into G.A.T.O. TOWER’s structural framework, the engineering team achieved a harmonious balance:

  • Uncompromised Safety: The structural core, reinforced shear walls, and foundation systems are engineered to comfortably withstand severe weather events.
  • Occupant Comfort & Quietude: High-rise occupants can often feel subtle motion in strong winds if a building lacks structural damping. G.A.T.O. TOWER’s structural stiffness minimizes building acceleration, ensuring residents and office occupants on upper floors enjoy quiet stability and peaceful living.

Setting a New Standard for High-Rise Excellence in Cambodia

G.A.T.O. TOWER is designed not only to transform the skyline of Boeung Keng Kang 1 (BKK1) but also to set a new benchmark for structural integrity and Japanese-inspired precision in Cambodia.
